Interactive Literacy Teaching
This Teaching video is presented by Drama Studio teachers Julie and Louise who use Mime firstly as a basis for effective storytelling.
The story is divided into sections whereby the students watch and then pause for a Over To You activity.
The approach uses interactive Drama teaching technique and embeds within it the additional Literacy skills of reading and particularly writing.

THE STORYLINE AND CONTENT
Two painters enter a park to paint a bench. At lunch time they go off to the snack van, forgetting to do a vital thing before leaving the bench! When two people arrive with a picnic and see the beautiful bench they take a seat.
Funny story, full of add-in possibilities for the students.
Park Bench begins with simple Mime exercises which are amusing and encourage creativity. Teachers piloting this programme have said that the Mime is ideal for less confident students and classes that are generally more reluctant to speak.
Students then watch the teachers mime a scene and they must comment on what they think is happening. The scene is then speeded up with detailed subtitles so that they can see exactly what the story is.
There are 3 of these scenes in this first section of the video and in the follow up the students try the mimes for themselves.
During the second part of the programme the teachers add in dialogue to the scenes and again the students follow this up themselves adding in their own ideas.
There are 11 Over To You Activities fully described but you will find your students will want to try many more as they get creative with the storyline!
